How to Measure for your Roman Blind

The first decision to make is whether you are fitting your Roman blind inside or outside your window recess.

How to Measure Inside the Recess

When fitting your Roman Blind inside the recess, the blind will normally be top fixed, towards the front of the recess. Your recess will need to be at least 2cm deep in order to fit the Roman blind track inside – make sure you check this measurement.

You need to be aware that when a Roman blind is fitted inside the recess, there will be light bleed along the sides of the blind, if you do not want this, you may want to consider fitting the blind outside of the recess.

Focusing your measurements in this area, check measure the width of the inside of the recess at several points along, making sure to take the smallest of the measurements (as the blind will need to pass down at the smallest point).

If you have a partially tiled recess, make sure to measure for the blind to fit down here.

We will deduct 1cm from the width of the recess measurement you give us for the track and blind size we make.

Again for the drop of your recess, measure the drop of the inside of the recess at several points along, taking the smallest of the measurements (so that the blind doesn’t hit the sil).

We require all of your measurements in metric centimetres (cm) to the nearest 0.1cm.

When you order your blind with us, you will order on ‘Recess Size’ for inside the recess measurements and we will make the required 1cm deduction on width (no deduction from the drop). If you require your blind a specific size, order on ‘Blind Size’ and tell us the exact size you would like your roman blind.

If you are struggling to measure for your blind, please send us an email, including a contact phone number and we will get back to you at our earliest opportunity to provide advice.

How to Measure Outside the Recess

When fitting your Roman Blind outside the recess, the blind will normally be face fixed, onto the wall above the recess.

Firstly measure the recess itself and take note of these measurements. Normally you may choose to fit the blind circa 10cm above the recess and overlapping the recess up to 5cm on each side, though these measurements do depend on how much wall space is available around the recess and also personal preference.

If you have a window sil that is a longer width than your recess, you may want to consider having your blind size the same size as your sil so that it looks square with the window.

We require all of your measurements in metric centimetres (cm) to the nearest 0.1cm.

When you order your blind with us, you will order on ‘Blind Size’ for outside the recess measurements, this will tell us the exact size you would like your roman blind.

Measuring for a blind outside the recess does require more personal judgement that for a blind inside the recess, therefore if you are struggling to measure for your blind, please send us an email, including a contact phone number and we will get back to you at our earliest opportunity to provide advice.
